Preparing Your Car for Subzero Temperatures

when temperatures get around zero
degrees Fahrenheit and below even a well-maintained car could use a little
help I’ll show you some products that will ensure your car will start may even
save you some fuel and prevent damaging wear as well
we hate frigid temperatures and so does our car as it gets colder outside the
battery has less power to turn over the engine and get it started and at the
same time the engine itself becomes harder for the battery and starter to
turn over because the lubricants get thicker as it gets colder outside the
best product you can get to combat this is called a block heater it’s an
electric heating element that goes into a hole in the engine block and sits in
the liquid coolant and when you plug it in it circulates and heats the entire
engine another option is an inline radiator hose heater what you do is you
cut the radiator hose remove about an inch worth of the hose and then clamp
this heater inline and what it does is it heats the coolant in the hose and it
circulates through the engine block as I mentioned a cold battery is a weak
battery and there is a solution for that too
it is a heated battery blanket all you have to do is remove the clamp wrap this
around the battery and secure it and when you plug it in it will raise the
temperature of the battery by 70 degrees the goal with the installations is to
keep the power cords away from the hot parts and moving parts keep them tied up
and route the plug either through the grill if you want or close to the front
of the hood once you plug it in it takes only a few hours before everything’s
warm enough to start all of these products cost less than $30 apiece it’s
really more about the installation we did this battery in about 15 minutes
because it’s very easy to access the block heater or inline hose heater would
probably require an hour to of labor charges if you take it to a professional
some cars and some installers take longer than others
